Mortimer Fairweather

Gloomhold’s gentlemanly broker. Patient, relentlessly upbeat, and thoroughly deceased. The outlook, he assures you, is excellent.

In their own words

  1. Welcome to the exchange! A splendid day for business. Being dead is no reason to be negative.

  2. A collapse in property values. Followed, regrettably, by the properties.

  3. No rush. Although your storage fees remain very much alive.

Mortimer Fairweather runs Gloomhold’s exchange, bringing together delvers with something to sell and delvers with a use for it. “Mort” to regulars, he is a skeletal merchant who has retained his manners, his waistcoat, and an unwavering faith in an improving economy.

Death has done remarkably little to discourage him.

A temporary market correction

Gloomhold’s repeated disasters are, in Mortimer’s considered opinion, temporary market corrections. Collapsing buildings are regrettable. Durg arriving to rebuild them is an exceptionally encouraging economic indicator. There is always something to look forward to, even if much of the town is currently something to look down into.

His optimism is entirely sincere. Mort is patient, genteel, and relentlessly upbeat, delivering cheerful assessments through a voice as dry as old parchment. He takes particular exception to suggestions that his business is dead. The distinction matters to him.

All the time in the world

At the exchange, one delver’s unwanted find can become another’s next purchase. Mortimer’s business is bringing the two together, with the courtesy of a gentleman who sees no reason for death to lower his professional standards.

He has all the time in the world. This does not mean late collection is free. As Mort would gently remind you, his storage fees remain very much alive.

Vinnie’s assessment

“Mortimer Fairweather. Runs the exchange. Oddly optimistic for a dead guy.”

For once, Vinnie’s summary requires very little correction.

“Oddly optimistic for a dead guy.” — Vinnie
