In their own words

  1. Right. A good story still has to survive the evidence. Even one of mine.

  2. I used to settle arguments with brass knuckles. These days, I use footnotes. Mostly.

  3. Mags, I had a perfectly good theory before you brought facts into it.

Vinnie used to settle arguments in the pit. These days, he prefers a battle report, three conflicting accounts, and enough ink to establish who is talking rubbish. He is the goblin behind the Archive: a former pitfighter who now preserves the history of Praetoria and tells its stories with all the restraint of a man who has never knowingly lowered his voice.

Behind the goggles

Intelligent, brave, and street-smart, Vinnie takes the record seriously. He digs through forgotten stories, compares testimony, and refuses to let a good tale excuse a bad fact. His certainty does occasionally outrun his evidence. That is usually when Mags appears.

His broad shoulders and heavy hands belong to his old profession. His battered brass cap, dark goggles, worn leather jacket, and rust-red waistcoat belong wherever he happens to be standing. The eyes stay behind the lenses.

Familiar faces

Mags is his investigative partner and the person most likely to ruin a magnificent theory with one quiet sentence. Bramrik made his first pitfighter knuckles. Picket sells him curios and resents being called “Pickles”. His older cousin Fink is building an observatory; Vinnie calls it a folly, painted the sign, and moved into the guest room anyway.

Rico Bellafonzo is another matter. Vinnie does not trust a word the bard says. Understanding a word would be a useful start.

For all his bluster, there is one resident he gives a wide berth: Tofu, the Archive’s large orange cat.

Details matter. So does getting the last word.
