In their own words

  1. Town fell down. Durg builds it back up. Try to keep it there.

  2. Got your letter. Quote's ready. Price went up. Building materials do that.

  3. Mind the hole. Was not on plans. Is on invoice.

First comes the wheelbarrow. Then comes the biggest orc Gloomhold has ever seen, pushing it through the south gate in the rain. His name is Durg. He is the contractor. The town needs rebuilding, and he has apparently come to do something about that.

A substantial arrival

To everyone else, he seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Vinnie remembers sending for a contractor after the first collapse. Eleven years ago. Durg got the letter. The quote is ready. The price has gone up.

He works from a pile of materials by the south gate, turning the town’s need for repairs and new facilities into actual building work. Gloomhold has plenty of people who can describe a disaster. Durg is the one with the tools.

Plans, permits, and a very large hammer

Durg is matter-of-fact, dry, and entirely at home discussing a catastrophe as a contracting problem. Delays, quotes, and the state of the job provide more than enough material for his humour.

His dented iron pot-helmet serves as a hard hat. A red pencil sits behind one ear; blue-ended plans fit under an arm the size of a beam. Rust-brown sleeves, slate-blue overalls, a loaded tool belt, and a chipped tusk complete the picture. He makes the equipment look small.

Quote’s ready. Price went up.
