Runeslinger

Ella's eyes widened. “What are you doing?” she said, her voice trembling.

Rak grinned. “I'm winning us some money. Twenty pieces of silver, to be exact.”

Ella wanted to slap the smug look from his face. “You won't win anything, you idiot! Don't you know who that is?”

Rak glanced at the man standing forty paces away at the far end of the street. His long trench coat billowed behind him as a gust of wind caught it. Rak frowned. “Who is he?”

“That's Charley 'Luck' Lane, the most famous runeslinger there is. You go up against him, and I'll need that twenty silver for your coffin.”

Rak gulped and edged toward the inn. “I'll be with you in a minute,” he called out. “I just need to use the privy.”

Ella grabbed his arm, and they ran. Runeslingers are the guardians and protectors of the Riftwatchers' leadership, the Runemancers. They are steadfast and wholly dedicated to their mission, willing to give their lives if necessary.

Their weapon, the runethrower, was designed by Oshuur Constantia herself. Each is meticulously crafted in the workshops of the Riftwatchers and customized to fit the individual runeslinger. Its discs can not only stun and cripple their target, but they are also imbued with runes carrying a potent affliction that makes spells of healing ineffective.

Only the very brave or the very foolish would choose to go head-to-head with the personal bodyguard of the Runemancers.
