Revealer
The skirmish was over before it had begun. Our position was superior, our numbers were greater, and the cavalry, well the cavalry, nobody can stand a charge by our knights. All that remained of our Chaos Legion enemy were the stragglers, loose ends to tie up, or so we thought.
We left at dawn, sent out in small hunting parties, to take prisoners and remove any pockets of resistance before they posed any real threat. I left camp with four other rangers. We headed to the East, beyond Lyver Creek, through outlying farms, toward the northern foothills.
After traveling for most of the day without incident and when the sun hung heavily in the sky, sinking into the distant mountains, weariness came upon us. So much so that we almost didn't see him. The shadow cast by a nearby tree enveloped the man—a crooked shape stooped over a body slumped on the ground. I looked to the other rangers who were beginning to fan out, encompassing the lonesome figure.
Our leader, Alec, called out to him, “You're now a prisoner of Khymeria and are coming with us!”
There was a cough, it was a strange guttural sound, and the figure stopped whatever it was doing and slowly stood with an awkward jerk, turning to face us. He was tall, but thin, and wore a strange robe. It was a deep purple color and was decorated with all manner of bones and skulls. He was holding a curved dagger by his side and blood dripped steadily from the tip.
I exchanged a glance with Alec and nodded to him. “Come on with you,” he said impatiently to the man.
That was when he looked into our eyes. He began to laugh as he lifted his head, black hair spilling over his shoulders. I could feel my blood run cold as he looked right into my soul, and I stepped back, a shiver running along my spine. His laughter faded into a cackle before a low chant began, resounding deep within him. Suddenly he doubled over as though in pain, his chanting becoming louder. The air around me seemed to tingle and I could smell the distinct stench of death. The man then stood bolt upright, throwing his arms into the air as he arched over backward, his eyes rolling up into his skull, and I swear for a brief moment, his feet lifted from the ground. Then he threw his arms toward us, and I felt an icy chill as one by one, my comrades crumpled to the ground, stunned into lifeless heaps, leaving only Alec and I standing.
Alec drew his bow as the man slowly looked to him, loosing his arrow and reloading as I lifted the hunting horn to my lips to call for aid. The arrow found its mark, striking the man in his shoulder. He barely flinched, but just took hold of the shaft and flung it to the ground.
I froze, trying to blow out the call for aid, but my mouth was dry and no sound came.
The man reached his hand out toward Alec, violet light growing into a snarling ball of energy. And then, with a muttered curse, he flung it at my friend. The magic struck Alec and stripped the flesh from his bones, killing him outright.
Finally, the fell creature's gaze fell upon me, the only one left. I dropped my mace and horn as my fear finally took complete control, and I turned to run. Not once did I look back.
Testament of Walter Brice, Priest of Angel Summit One of the most dangerous warlocks to fight within the Chaos Legion ranks, the Revealers are often released within the first waves of attack. Almost like casting a stone into a pool and watching the ripples unsettle the surface before the small waves break over the edges, the Revealers spread terror amongst their foe, indiscriminately casting their magic with dire effect whilst almost immune to the damage and enchantments thrown back at them. It is said that even their own allies fear them and it's not unusual for a Revealer to turn upon their own in the name of their goddess, Kuktune, being as they are, so obsessed with death and destruction.
Reading the scriptures from the worn tablets of skin, Revealers learn of Kuktune when they are acolytes in the Temple of Demise, floating within the unstable rift of Wvytoc. It teaches them that only death and destruction will please their goddess, and anything less than complete obedience will earn her painful wrath. As a result, the Revealers care little as to where they might be sent, wanting only to kill for Kuktune and bring her glory. Not only have they been known to turn upon their own allies when the enemy have been killed, but it is also written that a good, conscientious Revealer will harm itself if there is nothing else left to destroy.
