In the labor barracks of Oasis, kobolds whisper a name when the overseers aren't listening.

Grix.

The empire has been hunting him for years. They know he moves through the tunnels, speaks in abandoned cellars, organizes in the deep hours when exhaustion should claim every soul. Kobolds gather in darkness, and Grix stands before them.

His voice is rough and worn. His words are simple.

'We have names. We have families. We have worth.'

The empire calls it sedition. The movement grows anyway.

Grix's network runs through the labor lines like roots through stone. Messages on scraps of cloth. Whispers at water stations. Safe houses throughout Oasis where escaped kobolds hide before fleeing the empire. The Dragonsguard raids these places constantly. They find them empty. The kobolds have already moved.

Three years ago, they caught him in a grain warehouse. Forty kobolds scattered when the soldiers came. Grix stayed and let himself be taken so the others could run.

The commandant councilor, Songale, interrogated him personally. Chains. Questions. Demands for names.

Grix gave nothing.

They executed him at dawn.

The kobolds mourned in silence. The Dragonsguard congratulated themselves. The problem was solved.

Then a kobold in Solace swore she saw him preaching three days later. A mining camp reported the same. A warehouse worker in Oasis claimed Grix had spoken to their group last week.

The Grand Consul called it grief and hysteria, slaves seeing what they wanted to see.

The stories persist anyway. Was it really him they killed? Did someone take his place?

The Grand Consul doesn't care about the stories. They care that kobolds keep escaping. Keep organizing. Keep walking taller despite the weight on their backs.

Grix is careful now. He never stays in one place and never follows patterns. He never announces where he'll speak until hours before. He trusts cautiously, loves deeply, and knows the next capture will be his last.

Yet he speaks anyway, walking through an empire that wants him dead, whispering to slaves in darkness.

'You deserve more than the chains they gave you.'

Kobolds listen. Kobolds believe. Kobolds help each other escape, or refuse an unjust order, or simply stand straighter under their burdens.

When they do, they carry him with them.

In the barracks beneath Oasis, kobolds whisper a name.

Grix.

The empire listens and fears.
